Letoon is among our valuable historical hertitage with its well-preserved ancient theatre and its ruins, being a popular stop of the Lycian way. The ancient Letoon city is believed to be the cultural center of the Lycian city- states..The festivals of the age used to be celebrated in this city. The cleric and people of the Federation held the highest rank in this civilization.
Letoon, takes its name from Leto , the mother of the God Apollon and Artemis, to whom it was dedicated. As a story told by a poet tells the name Letoon originates from this myth. The God Zeus falls in love with Leto, the fine-haired daughter of the titans Coeus and Phoebe. Like his other amorous aff airs, he makes love with Leto and Leto gets pregnant. However the amorist Zeus's jealous wife Hera follows Zeus everywhere trying to avoid the delivery of the twins. Leto, scared of Zeus’s jealous wife escapes to Lycia located in Anatolia . In some myths Leto is said to have delivered her children Artemis and Apollon on Delos Island while some tell that Apollon was born in Patara. Leto is guided by the wolves she meets along her journey upto the Xanthos river. With a sense of thankfullness, Leto devotes the river to Apollon and gives the place formerly known as Termilles, the name Lycia derivated from the Greek word Lycos which means 'wolf'. With the Apollon cult spreading throughout Greece, different myths have been created to have the honour of being home to the Gods and Goddess. Artemis is a continuence of the main Goddess of Anatolia Kybele. The statute of Artemis in Ephesus is an appearant proof of this. Origin of Leto, the mother of these Gods is believed to be Anatolia. Leto has become integrated with the Anatolian Goddess Kybele. According to another myth Xanthos river comes to existence in order to cease Leto's sorrow and thirsty.
Leto cult is quite common along west coast of South Anatolia. The fishermen of Halicarnassus believe most of Greek gods are of Anatolian origin. Similarity between Leto and Kybele ; existence of proofs of Leto cult such as Halicarnasus, Knidos, Phrygia, Caria and etc., leads us to think that Leto may be a Godde ss of Anatolian origin.
