
Gemiler Island, is at 20 km marine distance to Ölüdeniz located in Fethiye District of Muğla . It is also known as St. Nicholas Island. It is an island situated at the south end of Fethiye Gulf, 9km to Fethiye.
The access to Gemiler Island is possible both by marine transport and land transport. There is a 6km road from Kayaköy down to Gemiler ısland. You can also prefer the minibus services. In summer, there is a bus service every 10 minutes moving from Fethiye. The road is approximately 16 km.
You can view many historical ruins on Gemiler Island. The city has been scattered upto the hill. The houses have been situated by the sea. At the peak is a fire showing the direction to the sailors with its smoke. The view from this hill resembles the Kapalıçarşı (Grand Bazaar) with the historical ruins scattered around.
Immediately off Kaya Village is a path down to Gemiler Bay as an alternative way through a panoroma decorated with olive and pine trees. Visitors of the bay ussually come on boats. While your boat is approaching the little harbour, you can enjoy the marvellous beauty of the bay.
On the island are many chapels ramaining from the Byzantine Empire. The chapels have been destroyed in time but managed to maintain their characteristic feautures..
When you land on the island, you have to pay an extra fee as the entrance charge. Later if you like, you can have a scouting trip on the island or you may choose to climb up the hill. When you reach the peak, you will see an excellent scene. The view around the island is quite attractive…
The biggest chapel of the island is set immediately at the entrance. It has the best view of the island. The chapel has its own stairs going down and a unique balcony type exit… excavations in the area still continues from time to time. The ruins are still visible. Some churches are completely closed and under conservation.
