Cadianda is set atop of a 400 meter high hill, 3 kms. to Üzümlü Municipality and 24km s.to Fethiye.
In ancient ages, it was located on Caunos -Araxa way. Cadianda features many ancient ruins. The primary one is the city walls surrounding a part of the city, the rock tombs and again other rock tombs and inscriptions remaining from the Lycian… not only Lycian but there are many other ruins from the Roman period in the area. The most significant of these is the theatre remaining from the Hellenistic age. Apart from this, we can see the bath, running track, agora, rock tombs and temples of unknown gods...
Cadianda is a settlement offering all the characteristic feautures of an ancient city. You can view the whole Fethiye, especially Fethiye sea , the gulf and the harbour through the hill. Cadianda land is quite wooded and it is considerable that most of these are pine trees since these trees are remarkably rare in Today's world. Cadianda territory, coming just a few kilometers after Üzümlü, is rugged and covered with soil .
Cadianda is known as ‘Kadawanti’ in Lycian language. Probably it refers to the people living here. Besides being an ancient city, Cadianda had many more features however it could never show itself up until Sir Charles Fellows, who was the first to mention this city. Fellows described Cadianda in his tablets and texts and helped gain recognition.
The city gained great importance in Roman period. The Lycian and Roman Hellenistic States are the two contracting civilizations which developed together in Cadianda Ancient City. As a proof, the coins used during Lycian league period in 168-67 B.C, display the name of Cadianda as well, amongst 24 cities in total.
The semi-circle shaped ancient theatre situated at the south edge of the Acropolis remaining rom Roman period has been totally destroyed with the earthquakes. And many of ruins from these destructions have been used by the villagers in their gardens.
Cadianda is recognized with its Lycian type tombs in Today's tourism and publishings. There are many historical works set on steep rocks and hills facing the Fethiye region. These tombs are built in a house shape and most feature reliefs on their walls. One of these tombs features on its side face a cavalry commander riding over a fallen warrior. Probably this monument is the tomb of a Prince. Some parts of this tomb have been removed to the British museum after the excavations.
